Wataynikaneyap Advances Transmission Corridor Analysis for Phase 2 (Connection of Remote Communities)

April 3, 2013

December 2012, Wataynikaneyap engaged SENES Consultants and Powertel to complete a preliminary corridor routing analysis to connect 10 remote First Nations communities currently serviced by diesel generation.  The group identified three alternative corridors (based on preliminary factors). These preliminary alternative corridors were mapped for discussion with the communities.

From March 18th to April 5th, Wataynikaneyap and SENES visited Kingfisher, Wunnumin, Kasabonika, Wapekeka, Muskrat Dam, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Wawakapewin, North Caribou,  and Sachigo Lake.  The purpose of the community visits was to present the preliminary information, and collect feedback.  In particular, the communities helped identify areas that should be avoided. The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) also participated in the community visits.

Based on feedback from the communities, the options will be updated, and further corridor evaluation and engagement will be completed prior to moving forward with and Environmental Assessment.
